Penn College Edged in NEAC Quarterfinals

MARCY, N.Y. – SUNY Poly dealt Penn College a 1-0 setback with a goal in the 84th minute, in the North Eastern Athletic Conference women's soccer quarterfinals Wednesday. Penn College ended its season at 8-9-3, while Poly improved to 11-6-3 and advanced to Saturday's semifinals opposite Penn State Abington at Penn State Berks.

"I couldn't be prouder of this team," said Penn College coach John McNichol, whose team improved by three more wins and a playoff berth from 2014. "Their hard work and dedication, not only in this match but the entire season, has been great.

"Once the sting of this loss goes away, we should all be able to look back and be proud of what we accomplished."

Corrina Marconi broke the scoreless deadlock with six minutes left in the match, when she lofted a pass from Nakeya Stedman from 14 yards out and just over Penn College keeper Colleen Bowes to the top right corner.

Penn College missed a great opportunity towards the end of the first half to add a goal. Caitlin McCarthy's indirect kick in the 43rd minute found the foot of Jordan Courter, who struck the ball well and to the right of the goal, but Poly keeper Angela Bartlett made the save. It was Penn College's only shot on goal in the first half, while Poly was held without a shot in the first.

Penn College fired two shots on goal in the 57th and 63rd minutes, but both Lauren Herr's and Robyn Beddow's attempts were stopped by Bartlett. Erica Maisonet sent a shot towards the net in the 79th minute for Poly but Bowes kept the game scoreless with a stop.

Penn College finished with six shots, while Poly had three.

Bowes finished with one stop and Bartlett picked up three saves for Poly.
