WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Early run production was the key in game one, while a late surge in the second contest secured Penn College a sweep against Morrisville State in a North Eastern Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Sunday. The Wildcats won game one 6-3 before pumping in seven runs in the sixth inning in the nightcap to earn a 7-1 victory.
Penn College, which won its fourth straight game, improved to 7-11 overall, 5-3 NEAC, while the Mustangs dropped to 5-12, 2-6.
In Game One,
Penn College pumped in four runs in the first innings.
Katie Kratzer belted a RBI double to center before
Jessica Gmerek stroked a one run triple to left to make 2-0.
Macie Lucas' brought in a run with a single and
Nicole Lo Furno reached on error, which brought in the fourth run of the first inning.
Morrisville added three runs in the third to pull within one, 4-3, before the Wildcats added two insurance runs in the sixth.
Shelby Lyter hit a RBI single and
Breanna Abbey belted a one run double to put Penn College ahead 6-3.
Alexandra Brennan, Lucas and Lyter each finished with two hits for Penn College.
Arika Stopper improved to 5-3 with a complete-game effort. She struck out five, walked one and surrendered three runs.
In Game Two,
After Morrisville scored an unearned run on a passed ball in the first inning neither team scored in the next four frames.
Penn College broke the scoreless drought with seven runs in the seventh inning. Gmerek started the scoring onslaught with single to center and Lucas followed with two run double to center to give the Wildcats a 3-1 lead. Lo Furno brought in the fourth run on a sacrifice hit and Stephane Kramer followed with a RBI single to put Penn College ahead 5-1.
Karey Wolfe's single to center brought in the sixth before an error plated the final run of the game.
Wolfe finished with two hits for Penn College, while
Shelby Lyter improved to 2-3 with a complete-game five hitter. She struck out eight, walked three and gave up one unearned run.
Penn College returns to action Monday, 3 p.m., at Keuka.
