Wildcats Split With Morrisville



QUEENSBURY, N.Y. – Penn College split a North Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader against Morrisville Friday, dropping the first game 8-7 before winning the second 12-4. The Wildcats stand at 1-1 NEAC, 3-9 overall, while the Mustangs are 1-5, 4-10.

In Game One,
Paula Conklin stroked a walk-off RBI single for Morrisville in the bottom of the seventh to secure an 8-7 win.

Both teams added four runs in the first inning with the Wildcats striking first. Doubles from Alexandra Brennan, Katie Kratzer and Jessica Gmerek gave Penn College a 3-0 lead and Karey Wolfe's pop up to short plated another run.

With the game knotted at 4-4, the Wildcats two runs in second on a Kratzer two-run double. Morrisville plated three runs in the bottom of third to take a 7-6 lead. The Wildcats tied the game again in the sixth when an error scored Breanna Abbey.

Abbey finished with three hits for Penn College, while Brennan, Kratzer and Nicole Lo Furno each had a pair of hits. Shelby Lyter fired a complete-game with two strikeouts and eight runs (five earned).

In Game Two,
Penn College opened the second game with five runs in the first inning. An early error by Morrisville scored both Abbey and Brennan, followed by Wolfe's RBI single and Shelby Lyter's sacrifice hit that plated two more.

After the Mustangs added two in the bottom of the first inning, the Wildcats matched it when Kratzer belted a two-run double in the top of the second. Penn College added three runs in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly from Macie Lucas and a two-run double by Wolfe. An error scored another run for the Wildcats in the fifth and Wolfe scored the final run when she launched a solo homer in the sixth inning.

Wolfe finished 3 for 4 with 4 RBI and Samantha Hill was 2 for 3 for Penn College. Arika Stopper improved to 2-1 with a complete-game effort, including three strikeouts and one walk.
