UTICA, N.Y. – Penn College junior
Ryan Hostrander tossed a complete-game to help Penn College to a 3-2 win over SUNYIT in the first round of the North Eastern Athletic Conference baseball playoffs Friday. Penn College avenged its regular season sweep by SUNYIT and will take on the winner of Penn State Abington - Penn State Berks Saturday at 9 a.m.
Penn College (15-19) struck first in the opening frame when
Cole Weachock knocked a RBI double down the right field line that plated
Evan Vigna.
Jeremy Rall led off the game with a single but was later caught stealing third after Vigna walked. Vigna moved to second after
Zach Weil drew a free pass before Weachock brought him home.
SUNYIT (16-15) evened the game in the bottom of the first inning.
Penn College took a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning. Weachock hit a one-out single to left and moved to third when
James Simasek followed with a double to center.
Noah Esposito plated Weachock on a fly out to right before
Deric Ellerman brought home Simasek with a single to center.
SUNYIT added a late run in the eighth before Hostrander closed out the game with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Weachock led Penn College with two hits.
Hostrander improved to 5-2 after nine innings of work. He struck out six, walked one, scattered six hits and allowed just one earned run.
