ALFRED, N.Y. –
Ben Sosa converted two free throws with six seconds left to lift Penn College to an 86-85 win over Alfred State in a non-conference men's basketball game Sunday. The Wildcats improved to 2-2, while the Pioneers fell to 0-4.
Tyree Vidal led the Wildcats with 19 points,
Erik Perry Jr. added 12,
Shaekwon Grant-Wheeler netted 11, and
Thomas Ross finished with 10 for Penn College.
Marcus Rhett and Tyler Elliott led Alfred State with 18 points each.
The first half featured five deadlocks and several lead changes for the majority of the period. The final tie occurred after a shot by the Pioneers with 2:24 left before the break. Penn College closed out the half with an 11-2 run – led by five points from Vidal -- to lead 46-37 at halftime.
The Pioneers opened the second half with 11-straight points and regained their lead, 48-46, with 17:27 left in the game. Vidal's three with 13:04 left put the Wildcats ahead 57-52 before the game was tied seven more times. After the Pioneers tied the game at 84, and went ahead 85-84 with 19 seconds left, Sosa sank his free throws.
Penn College returns to action Wednesday, 7 p.m., in its North Eastern Athletic Conference opener hosting the defending NEAC champions Lancaster Bible.
