Game Recap: Softball |

Wildcats Split with Keuka; Eye Playoff Berth

KEUKA PARK, N.Y.- Penn College split a pair of games against Keuka College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Saturday.  Penn College improved to 10-8 NEAC, 17-18 overall after a 2-1 win in the first game, and a 6-1 setback in the second contest.

The Wildcats are behind Keuka (14-4), Cazenovia (13-7) and SUNY Poly (12-6) in the North Division with two games still scheduled. In order to get the final playoff berth from the North Division (top three teams qualify), Penn College needs to sweep SUNY Cobleskill (2-16) tomorrow and Keuka has to sweep SUNY Poly.

If that scenario occurs, Penn College and SUNY Poly would be tied for third, but the Wildcats would clinch the final spot because of the second tiebreaker (record against division opponents, first to worst). Penn College has split with Keuka, while Poly (if it losses tomorrow) would have been swept by Keuka.

Rain is forecasted tomorrow in New York and Pennsylvania and could force the cancellation of games. If Penn College can't play Cobleskill Sunday, the game will not be rescheduled because Penn College has final exams this week (Division III strongly encourages schools to not play games during finals), and all NEAC games must be completed by Tuesday. If games can't be completed by Tuesday, the current standings will be used for playoff seeding.

In game one,
After Keuka took a 1-0 lead in the first, Penn College added two in the third inning.

Nicole Lo Furno plated Tiana McCormick with a RBI single to center before Kelsey Gantz plated Taylor Krow with a single.

Krow led the Wildcats at the plate with three hits, including two doubles.

Amanda Kustanbauter improved to 8-7 after seven innings of work. She allowed one run on six hits, with three strikeouts and two walks.

In game two,
Keuka added four runs in the third and two in the fourth to take a 6-0 lead.

Penn College scored its only run in the fifth when Lo Furno knocked a single to right, that plated McCormick.

Lauren Stehman fell to 4-5, allowing four runs on three hits.

The Wildcats are scheduled to travel to Cobleskill, 12 p.m., Sunday.
