Wildcats Pick Up First Win

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – Penn College picked up its first win this season with a 67-62 win over Wilson College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference women's basketball game Sunday. The Wildcats improved to 1-8 overall, 1-4 NEAC, while the Phoenix fell to 2-7, 0-5.

Alicia Ross scored a game-high 36 points for Penn College, going 12 of 26, and grabbed a game-best 12 rebounds.  Gwendolyn Lavelle added nine points and Jane Herman and Maddie Wenk both finished with eight.

Jordyn Day netted 24 for Wilson and Lindsey Purvis finished with 14.

Deadlocked at 5-5 early in the first quarter, Wilson used a 12-0 run to take a 17-5 lead with 5:44 left. Penn College answered with an 11-3 spurt, capped by threes from Lavelle and Ross, to make it 20-16 at the end of the opening quarter. The Wildcats trailed the entire second quarter before Natali Fargus' jumper late in the quarter pulled Penn College within two, 33-31, at halftime.

The Wildcats evened the game at 33-33 after a pair of Wenk free throws at 8:14 in the third quarter before three more ties ensued over the next six minutes. Wilson led 48-44 at the end of the quarter. Ross tied the game for a final time with a layup to make it 50-50 with 7:23 left in the game, which sparked a 14-7 run from Penn College and its largest lead of the game, 64-57, on Ross' layup with 49 seconds remaining.

Penn College returns to action Tuesday, 5 p.m., at Lancaster Bible.
