WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Penn College erased a 10-point first half deficit, and withstood a late Elmira rally, in an 87-80 win over the Eagles in a non-conference men's basketball game Tuesday. The Wildcats picked up their first win this season and improved to 1-3, while Elmira fell to 1-3.
Robert Young Jr. scored a career-high 25 points on 7 of 16 shooting. He added a team-high four assists and grabbed three rebounds.
Ben Sosa finished with 22 points, Spencer Bartron added 17, and Ryan Lockman contributed 10 points for Penn College.
Henry Cuffee led Elmira with 25 points and pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds. Hayden Harkins finished with 23 points and Justin Porrett added 10.
The Eagles took a 17-7 lead with 14:36 left in the first half and led by seven, 25-18, with 9:55 on the clock. The Wildcats answered with a 20-7 run, spanning nearly nine minute, to even the game at 27-27 with 5:43 left before halftime. Elmira built a six-point lead, 37-31, following a 10-4 run with 1:53 remaining. Young scored the next seven consecutive points to put Penn College ahead 38-37 at halftime.
Penn College took a 10-point lead, 53-43, on Bartron's trey with 17:41 left in the game, and its largest advantage, 63-49, when
Brandon Fedoriw connected from long distance with 11:35 on the clock. Elmira pulled within four, 79-74, with 2:35 left but Penn College held off the rally with an 8-6 run down the stretch.
Penn College returns to action Sunday, 2 p.m., at Lycoming.
