BOSTON, Mass. – Penn College cut a 14-point deficit to two possessions late in the fourth, but it was not enough as Fisher College managed a 75-69 win in a non-conference women's basketball game Sunday. The Falcons improved to 7-5, while the Wildcats fell to 1-9.
Gwendolyn Lavelle shared game-high honors with 23 points on 8 of 18 shooting, including 6 of 12 from long distance. Ericka Lepley finished with 16 for the Wildcats, while
Jane Herman added 14. Cassi Kuhns grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
Choon-Hee Chae led Fisher with 23 points, while three other players finished with double-digits.
Deadlocked at 8-8, with just over five minutes left in the first, Penn College exploded for an 11-5 run to take a 19-13 lead at the end of the quarter. Herman paced the run with four points. The Falcons opened the second quarter with a 10-0 run to lead 23-19 with 4:48 left before the break. Fisher led by as many as 13 before finishing the first half, ahead 36-26.
The Falcons increased their lead by 24 in the third and held a 63-47 advantage at the end of the third quarter. Penn College chipped away at Fisher's lead in the fourth, pulling within four, 71-67, on Lavelle's layup with 41 seconds left in the game. The Falcons iced the game 4 for 4 from the line the in the final minute.
Penn College returns to action Jan. 8 at Misericordia.
