Pioneers Start Strong; Outlast Wildcats

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Alfred State opened the game with a 12-0 run, which helped the Pioneers to a 71-64 win over Penn College in a non-conference men's basketball game Saturday. The Wildcats fell to 1-8, while the Pioneers improved to 6-3.

Ben Sosa led Penn College with 20 points, on 8 of 19 from the floor and grabbed eight rebounds. Robert Young Jr. added 13 points, and Carson Garvis finished with 11. Jesse White grabbed a team-best 10 rebounds for the Wildcats.

Alexshay Pearce paced Alfred State with a game-high 22 and Dante Jordan finished with 11.

Following its 12-0 lead to start the contest, Alfred State led by 16, 23-7, with 13:33 left in the opening half, which led to a 21-9 run from Penn College to pull within four, 32-28, after a pair of Young free throws. The Pioneers ended the half, ahead 36-31.

Penn College opened the second half with an 8-3 run to even the game at 39-39 on back-to-back Spencer Bartron's threes with 16:39 left in the game. Alfred State regained the lead seconds later and held a one-possession advantage for nearly eight minutes. Penn College pulled as close as one, 51-50, on a Ryan Lockman free throw with 9:15 left in the game and Young's layup, to make it 57-56 with 5:54 left. That was as close as Penn College reached as the Pioneers held on to their lead the remainder of the game.

The Wildcats returns to action Friday, 6 p.m., against York College (NY) in the Crosstown Challenge hosted by Lycoming College.
