Wildcats Take Two from Cazenovia

CAZENOVIA, N.Y. – Penn College opened North Eastern Athletic Conference play with a sweep of Cazenovia in a softball doubleheader Sunday. PCT won the first game 12-5, and the nightcap 9-5 to improve to 2-0 NEAC, 6-5 overall.

In game one,
Deadlocked 1-1 after a Maddie Wenk RBI single in the second inning, Penn College exploded for seven runs in the top of the seventh. Elizabeth Asher, Kylie Shreiner and Becky Schweikert each knocked in a run before Laycee Clark ripped a two-run single and Taylor Krow brought in two more on a double.

Cazenovia clawed back with two runs in the third and one in the fourth and fifth innings. Penn College answered with two runs in each of the final two innings.

Schweikert brought in two more on a single in the sixth and Asher plated a pair with single to right.

Schweikert finished with three hits, while Krow, Taylor Brooks, and Asher each had two hits.

Brooks improved to 2-1 after six innings of work. She allowed five runs on five hits, struck out eight and walked four.

In game two,
Penn College jumped out to 2-0 lead after RBIs from Sophie Coldsmith and Krow in the second inning before Cazenovia tied the game in the third with a pair of runs.

PCT took a 5-2 lead in the fifth when Coldsmith knocked in a pair on a single and Clark brought in another with a single. Cazenovia pulled within one in the bottom of the frame before Penn College tacked on four in the sixth.

An error scored the first run of the sixth before Wenk cleared the bases with a single to center.

Wenk and Coldsmith both finished with three hits, while Clark picked up two.

Amanda Kustanbauter improved to 2-4 with a complete-game effort. She allowed three earned on nine hits, struck out three and walked two.

Penn College returns to action Monday, 3 p.m., hosting Morrisville.
