MORRISVILLE, N.Y. –
Hunter Gosnell stopped an overtime penalty kick and four consecutive shootout attempts to help the Penn College reach its second straight North Eastern Athletic Conference semifinal.
Deadlocked at 1-1 after two overtimes, Penn College outlasted Morrisville, 2-0, in shootout in Tuesday's NEAC men's soccer quarterfinals. The Wildcats used a shootout win in 2017 to advance to their first NEAC final four.
Penn College will take on Lancaster Bible College, 2 p.m., Saturday at Penn State Abington.
Gosnell (7 saves) made his biggest save in the 105
th minute after his foul led to a penalty kick attempt with the score knotted at 1-1. Gosnell turned away Daniel Agboba's attempt, which eventually forced the match to shootout.
In shootout, Gosnell stoned all four Mustang attempts, while
Kevin McFarland and
Daniel Jackson netted consecutive attempts for Penn College.
The first half ended scoreless with neither team managing many quality shot on goal.
Colton Wartman's header was stopped in the eighth minute before
Alex Gradwell's shot in the 32
nd minute was turned away. Gosnell picked up three saves in the half.
The Wildcats got on the board in the 54
th minute when
Kevin McFarland's pass reached the back of the net off Jackson's foot before the match was evened in the 69
th minute when a Penn College defender's mistake allowed the ball to find the net. The Wildcats had one last look at the net in the 73
rd minute but Jackson's shot was stopped.
Gosnell stopped a pair of shots in the first overtime, while Penn College was held without a shot on goal in the period. The Wildcats fired two shots on frame in the second overtime but both
Vance Gradwell attempts in the 100
th minute were saved.
Morrisville outshot Penn College 24-14, while the Wildcats held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
