CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa. – Penn College freshman Tucker Phillipe-Johansson and sophomore
Will DeMarco won North Eastern Athletic Conference men's tennis championships Friday at Birchwood Tennis Club. Phillipe-Johansson won the No. 2 singles title, DeMarco took the No. 3 single crown, and the two combined to earn gold at No. 2 doubles.
Phillipe-Johansson was also voted the NEAC Rookie of the Year.
Blake Whitmire and
Joseph Morrin both finished second at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively, while
Nicholas Pascual finished fourth at No. 4 singles.
In doubles competition,
Phillipe-Johansson and DeMarco knocked off Penn State Berks, 8-2, in the first round, and handled Penn State Abington, 8-2, in the championship match of No. 2 doubles.
Stephen Helminiak and
Darien Hively fell 8-4 in the first of No. 3 doubles, and lost the consolation match, 8-7 (7-4) to Penn State Berks.
In singles competition,
Phillipe-Johansson knocked off Saint Elizaeth's Carmin Cronheim, 6-1, 6-0, in the first round, before beating Abington's Ilker Erkut, 6-0, 6-1, in the championship. Demarco handed Abington's Phillip Antonoff a 6-2, 6-0 loss in the first round and knocked off Berks' Jeremy Heist, 6-0, 6-4 in the finals.
Whitmire used a 6-0, 6-2 win in the first round before falling in a highly competitive match to Berks' Jose Palomeque, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 in the championship round. Morrin was a 6-3, 6-3 winner in the first round before losing to Abington's Adam Moskal, 6-4, 6-1 in the finals.
Pascaual fell in the first round, 7-5, 7-5, and bowed out in the consolation finals, 8-4.
Phillipe-Johansson and DeMarco earned All-NEAC First Team honors in singles and doubles, while Whitmire and Morrin were named to the second team.
