Penn College Splits on First Day of NEAC Final Four; Advances to Saturday’s Semifinal

READING, Pa. – Penn College advanced to the second day of the North Eastern Athletic Conference Final Four after going 1-1 on the first day. The Wildcats beat SUNY Cobleskill, 7-1, in the first game, before dropping a 3-1 decision to Penn State Berks in the second game.

It was the first time in program history that Penn College reached the second day of the double elimination Final Four.

The Wildcats will have a rematch with the Tigers Saturday, 11 a.m., in the NEAC Semifinal game. The winner faces the Nittany Lions in a 1 p.m. championship game and would have to beat Berks twice to claim the NEAC crown.

In game one,
Penn College pumped in four runs in the second inning, which started with Maddie Wenk's triple to right that plated Olivia Hemstock. Shayla Bickel's bunt single brought in Wenk, Taylor Krow's single to right allowed Bickel to touch home, and Kylie Shreiner brought home Krow with single up the middle.

Cobleskill made it 4-1 in the third before the Wildcats tacked on three in the sixth.

Wenk drew a bases loaded walk to score Taylor Brooks, an error plated Kyla Benner, and Shreiner batted in Wenk with a single to left.

Krow, Shreiner, and Wenk all finished with two hits for Penn College, while Shreiner and Wenk each batted in a pair of runs.

Morgan Heritage improved to 10-7 with a complete-game performance. She scattered five hits, allowed one unearned run, struck out eight, and walked zero batters.

In game two,
Berks scored three unearned runs – on two errors – in the third inning, and held Penn College hitless until the fifth inning.

The Wildcats stranded a runner at third in the fifth after Taylor Brooks found her way to third after a single up the middle to lead off the inning. Shreiner – who led off the seventh with a double – scored on Brooks' double to left field to make it 3-1, but Brooks was stranded at third again to end the game.

Brooks picked up two of Penn College's three hits.

Kassidy Svenson fell to 6-3 after three innings of work. She allowed three unearned runs, on seven hits, with no strikeouts, and one walk. Kyla Benner finished the final three innings, scattering two hits.
