Morrisville Edges Penn College; Sosa Reaches 1,000 Points

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Morrisville netted six unanswered points in the final two minutes to escape with a 76-71 win over Penn College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference men's basketball game Sunday. The Wildcats fell to 2-10 overall, 0-3 NEAC, while the Mustangs improved to 6-6, 3-0.

Penn College senior Ben Sosa became the eighth player in program history to reach 1,000 career points.

How it Happened: The Wildcats erased a nine-point deficit in the second half with a 15-2 run to take a 60-56 lead on Corey Blackwell's jumper with 7:33 left in the game. The contest was tied three more times in the ensuing three minutes before Penn College took its final lead, 71-70, on a Jesse White jumper with 2:40 left in the game. The Mustangs finished the game with six unanswered points.

Following four lead changes, and three ties, in the opening five minutes, Penn College went on a 21-8 run to take its largest lead, 31-18, on a Trey McCullough layup with 6:35 on the clock. The Mustangs responded with a 17-4 run to tie the game at 35 with 1:34 before halftime. The Wildcats led 39-38 at the break.

Inside the Box: Sosa scored a team-high 17 points for Penn College, on 7 of 10 from the floor and 3 of 5 from line. Ryan Lockman and Carson Garvis both finished with 10 points, and Lockman grabbed a team-best nine rebounds.

Tyrin Miller led the Mustangs with 18 points, and two others finished in double figures for Morrsiville.

Outside the Box: "I am so proud of our team for how hard we competed and executed.  That was a fantastic game to see our growth as a program," Penn College coach Geoff Hensley said. "We just fell short one or two possessions down the stretch to close it out.  Morrisville is a great program with a championship pedigree.  I thought our defensive effort was fantastic when we had all five guys engaged and helping each other.

"Ben Sosa had a very good offensive game being aggressive attacking the basket and Elijah Vazquez continued to expand his game as a playmaking guard leading us with six assists.  As a coach, I love seeing 20 assists, as that is a clear example of how unselfish our players are and team basketball we play.  Jesse White came off the bench with a great spark with other key contributors like Corey Blackwell and Damon Kreider.  Our depth on the bench was excellent tonight and something we need to build off of moving forward."
