Wildcats Punch Ticket to NEAC Finals

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Penn College swept Penn State Abington Tuesday to punch its ticket to the North Eastern Athletic Conference Softball Championship game. The Wildcats (17-3) won the first game, 6-2, before edging the Nittany Lions (8-11), 5-4, in the nightcap.

The win advanced Penn College to this weekend's championship series hosting Penn State Harrisburg. A doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Elm Park with an if necessary contest slated for Sunday.

In game one
How it Happened: Penn College jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first and second innings. Singles from Olivia Hemstock and Ivvy Morder plated runs in the first, while Hemstock struck again with a two-run single in the second inning.

Abington cut into the lead with two runs in the top of the fourth before Penn College answered with two in the bottom of the frame with RBIs by Jordan Specht and Morder.

Inside the Box: Hemstock picked up three hits at the plate and Morder finished with two.

Kyla Benner improved to 9-1 after a complete-game effort in the circle. She allowed two runs, on four hits, with 13 strikeouts, and two walks.

In game two
How it Happened: The Wildcats took an early 2-0 lead with RBIs from Margaret Mangene and Jaylnn Cochran in the first inning before committing an error in the second and third innings that led to a pair of runs to deadlock the game at 2-2. Abington took the lead, 3-2, in the fourth inning before Hemstock's double to center in the fifth tied the game again, 3-3.

An error by the Lions in the sixth put Penn College ahead 4-3 and Hemstock added an insurance run with a single to right to give the Wildcats a 5-3 advantage.

Abington led off the seventh with a pair of singles that eventually led to runners on second and third and forced the Wildcats to call on Benner. Benner struck out the first two batters, allowed a run to score on a wild pitch, and ended the game by inducing a fly out to right.

Inside the Box: Hemstock and Cochran both recorded two hits to lead the Penn College offense.

Kassidy Svenson improved to 7-2 after six innings of work. She allowed just two earned, on eight hits, with three strikeouts and one walk. Benner picked up her first save of the season with a hitless seventh, including two strikeouts.

Outside the Box: Penn College also reached the NEAC Finals in 2019 and finished second.
