Penn College Bows Out of Regionals on Walk-Off Homer

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Penn College's NCAA Regional run ended on a heartbreaking two-run home run to lift Gettysburg to a 6-5 win in an elimination game of the NCAA Division III Softball Atlantic Regional Friday at Virginia Wesleyan University. The Wildcats wrapped up their season at 19-5, while the Bullets improved to 12-4.

How it Happened: Olivia Moser slugged a two-run homer to left center in the bottom of the seventh inning to secure the win for Gettysburg. The home run came with one out, a player on first, and Penn College holding a 5-4 lead.

The Wildcats took an early lead with three runs in the top of the first inning. Margaret Mangene's single to right plated Olivia Hemstock, before Lesley Fritz smacked a two-run single to center to bring in Ivvy Morder and Jordan Specht.

Gettysburg evened the score in the bottom of frame on a two-run double by Emily Colline and a sacrifice fly from Allie Cluster.

Penn College regained the lead in the fourth inning when Maddie Hurst's single to left brought in Madison Shaffer and Specht knocked in Shayla Bickel with a single to left center to put the Wildcats ahead 5-3.
A wild pitch in the fifth inning pulled the Bullets within one, 5-4, which eventually led to Moser's heroics in the seventh.

Inside the Box: Specht led Penn College at the plate with two hits, while Hurst, Hemstock, Mangene, Fritz, Shaffer, and Bickel each picked up a hit.

Kassidy Svenson started the game for the Wildcats. The senior fired four innings, allowing three earned runs, on five hits, with one strikeout and one walk. Kyla Benner relieved Svenson in the fifth and fell to 9-2 after allowing two earned runs, on three hits, with three strikeouts, and no walks.

Coach Speak: "I can't wait until next year to build on what we did this year," Penn College head coach Angie Hunley said. "Returning as many players as we are, we expect to be competitive. We expect to give ourselves the opportunity to come right back to a competition like this."
