ST. MARY'S, Md. — At St. Mary's College, playing its second United East game in as many days, the Penn College women's basketball team again got off to a great first quarter before losing, 53-42, to fall to 4-13 overall and 3-7 in the conference. St. Mary's is 8-9, 6-4.
How it happened: Both teams were slow getting their offenses going in the opening period but Penn College warmed up first, building a 9-0 lead with 3:27 left, thanks in-part to 3-point baskets by
Kayleigh Miller and
Rachel Teats, and closed out the frame with an 11-4 lead. St. Mary's got right back into the game quickly in the second quarter as the Seahawks opened with a 21-4 run to lead 25-15 with 3:12 on the clock and closed out the half in front, 28-19.
St. Mary's held the upper hand again in the third quarter, 13-9, and carried a 41-28 lead headed into the final 10 minutes of play. The Seahawks quickly opened a 16-point, 44-28, lead in the fourth before a jumper by
Ja'Quela Dyer, jumper by
Aubrey Stetts and trey by Teats helped bring Penn College back to within nine but that was as close as it could get. St. Mary's led in points off turnovers, 24-4, and points in the paint, 24-14.
Inside the box: Maci Ilgen led the Wildcats with 10 points, while Ilgen and
Ja'Quela Dyer each had 12 rebounds.
Karon Williams topped St. Mary's with 18 points.
