WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — Hosting Penn State Abington in a United East game on Saturday, the Penn College men's basketball team lost, 74-63, to drop to 5-16 overall and 5-9 in the conference. PS Abington is 12-10, 6-7.
How it happened: In what proved to be a closely contested first half, Chris Coyne opened the scoring with a 3-point goal closed out the half with another trey that pulled Penn College within one, 34-33, at the intermission. In between, the game was tied six times with the Wildcats leading by as many as four at 5-1 and PS Abington leading by as many as five at 28-23.
The lead changed hands twice in the early portion of the second half before Abington used a 14-0 burst to open a 48-35 advantage with 16:05 left. The Nittany Lions went on to lead by as many as 17 at 58-41 with 11:09 left before Penn College trimmed the difference to 10 at 68-58 on a 3-pointer by Rees Watkins with 1:55 remaining but it could get no closer. For the game, Abington led in points off turnovers, 24-8, and outscored the Wildcats in the paint, 42-24.
Inside the box: Gavin Barrett topped Penn College with 21 points and eight assists while Jesse White was tops with 13 rebounds.
Mohamed Mansaray led Abington with 17 points.
