WILLIAMSPORT, PA: Penn College extended their winning streak to thirteen games with a sweep of Penn State Abington on Wednesday afternoon. The Wildcats won game one 1-0 and game two 1-0. With the wins the Wildcats improve to 21-6 overall (16-1 UEC) while the Nittany Lions drop to 16-10 overall and 11-5 in the UEC.
How it happened: The story of the day was the Wildcats starting pitcher's.
Kyla Benner (11-3) and Mackenzie Weaver (10-2) combined for 31 strikeouts on the day. Benner notched the win in game one with a career high 17 strikeouts while allowing just two hits and one walk. 16 out of her 17 strikeouts were by way of swing and misses. The Wildcats scored the winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning when
Maddie Hurst beat out an infield single to third that scored
Jaylynn Cochran.
In game two, Mackenzie Weaver pitched a brilliant one hitter while striking out a career high14 batters. Weaver allowed just one walk and 11 of her 14 strikeouts were by swing and misses. The Wildcats were able to muster up just enough offense when in the bottom of the sixth inning
Margaret Mangene hit a sac fly to right field that scored
Madison Shaffer from third.
In the box: The Wildcats were limited to eight hits on the day.
Jordan Specht paved the way with a three hit day with Hurst and Mangene adding two hits apiece.
The Wildcats return to action on Friday when they host Morrisville State College at 3 pm.
