Wildcats edged by Berks in United East Championship

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Penn College dropped a 5-3 decision to Penn State Berks in the United East Softball Championship Sunday. The Wildcats advanced to their third-straight finals appearances after a 9-1 win over Penn State-Abington in Sunday's semifinal contest.

Penn College wrapped up its season at 28-9.

The Nittany Lions struck first in the championship game when a fielder's choice in the top of the second inning gave Berks a 1-0 lead. The Wildcats answered in the bottom of the frame when Ivvy Morder's sacrifice fly to right plated Mackenzie Weaver to tie the game at 1-1.

The Lions tacked on three in the fourth to take the lead for good, 4-1, before Jordan Specht's single to left in the fifth brought in Maddie Hurst to make it 4-2. Berks added an insurance run in the top of seventh and Hailey DeBrody's single to center in the seventh scored Olivia Hemstock for the Wildcats final score.
Specht finished with three hits for Penn College and Margaret Mangene and Weaver each added two.

Weaver fell to 14-3 after 3.1 innings in the circle. She surrendered four earned runs, on eight hits, with no strikeouts, and one walk. Kyla Benner closed out the final 3.2 innings, surrendering one earned run, on six hits, with five strikeouts, and one walk.

Specht's single to center in the first inning against Abington in the semifinals plated Olivia Hemstock to give Penn College a 1-0 lead. The Wildcats added two more runs in the second when Hurst doubled home Madison Shaffer and Hemstock brought in Hurst with a single to right.

Weaver's RBI single in the third gave Penn College a 4-0 lead and an error made it 5-0. The Nittany Lions went on the board in the fourth, but the Wildcats plated four consecutive runners, spanning the fourth, fifth, and sixth, to invoke the run rule. Specht, Benner, and Weaver each hit a RBI single and Ivvy Morder ended the game with a single down the left side.

Hemstock finished 3 for 3, with three runs scored, and two RBI for Penn College. Weaver was 2 for 4 at the plate and batted in a pair of runs.

Benner improved to 14-5 after six innings in the circle. She allowed one earned run, on four hits, with 11 strikeouts, and no walks.
