Gavin Barrett paved the way with 13 points and 12 assists to lead Penn College men's basketball to an 89-74 victory against Penn State Berks on Saturday. Five other Wildcats finished in double figures as the team improved to 1-1 in United East action (4-5 overall), while dropping Berks to 1-1 (2-7 overall).
How it happened: Berks raced out to an 8-0 lead before
Michael Woolridge got the scoring going for the Wildcats with a layup two minutes in to the game and sparking a 13-7 run to knot the score at 15-15 on a
Ronn Flood, Jr., bucket.
After the Nittany Lions regained a lead at 25-24 with 7:22 on the clock,
Ahmir Ellzy cashed in a three to start a 10-0 run to stretch to lead, 34-25 with five minutes in the half. Four Barrett free throws and a two-pointer from
Max Jackowsky handed the Wildcats a 44-37 lead at the break.Â
Berks battled through the first six minutes of the second to tie the score, 52-52, with a 3-pointer. A Flood, Jr., and-one put the Wildcats back in front and went on another 15-5 run capped by a
David Brown triple to go up 10 (67-57) midway through the frame as the Wildcats remained in front until the final buzzer.
Inside the box: Â Jackowsky and
Livingston Cross nearly registered a double-double as Jackowsky tallied 13 points and eight boards and Cross added 12 points and eight rebounds. Ellzy poured in 13 points and Brown finished with 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting including a pair of threes. The Wildcats shot 52.4% (33-for-63) and drained eight 3-pointers while limiting Berks to 45.0% (27-60) and nine turnovers.Â
Andre Ballard scored a team-high 22 points and eight rebounds for Berks.
