MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Penn College's softball team opened its season with a 3-1 mark in the first half of the Wildcats' Spring Break trip this week. PCT dropped its opener, 11-3, to Medaille before picking up a 6-2 win over Gettysburg, a 5-3 victory against Fitchburg State and a 9-2 win over Cedar Crest.
Against Medaille,
Penn College made it 1-0 in the top of the first on
Jordan Specht's RBI double. Medaille tied the game in the bottom of the first and tacked on three in the fourth. Specht made it 4-3 in the top of the fifth when she belted a two-run shot to center field before the Mavericks added six in the fifth and one in the sixth.
Specht finished 3 for 3 with three RBI to lead the offense, while
Kyla Benner fell to 0-1 after throwing 4.2 innings, with four strikeouts, one walk, and seven earned runs.
Against Gettysburg,
The Wildcats bounced back in game two and jumped out with four runs through three innings. Madison Herr brought in a run in the second.
Lexi Snyder made it 3-0 with a two-run double in the third and
Margaret Mangene added another run with a double. The Bullets got on the board with two runs in the fourth before an error in sixth brought in Herr and Specht's RBI single in the sixth gave the Wildcats a 6-2 lead.
Specht led the offense with two hits and Mackenzie Weaver improved to 1-0 after a complete-game performance. She allowed one earned run, on four hits, with three strikeouts, and one walk.
Against Fitchburg,
The Falcons took an early 2-0 lead with a run in the first and one in the third. The Wildcats tied the game with a pair of runs in the fourth on Mangene's two-run triple to right center, which eventually forced extra innings. In the top of the eighth, Specht led off with a single before Weaver's sacrifice bunt moved Specht and
Mackenzie Houck (who started on second) over.

Ivvy Morder added a pair of insurance runs with a two-run double to left.
Snyder led Penn College at the plate with a pair hits, while Mangene and Morder both brought in a pair of runs. Weaver improved to 2-0 after another complete-game effort. The sophomore surrendered one earned run, on seven hits, with 11 strikeouts, and three walks.
Against Cedar Crest,
Maddie Hurst's two-run double in the second inning put Penn College ahead 2-0 before CC tied the game in the fourth. The Wildcats rallied with two in the fifth and sixth innings and three in the seventh.
Kassidy Chase smacked a two-run single in the fifth, before RBI singles by Houck and Specht in the sixth made it 6-2.
Taylor Luzier's double,
Madison Shaffer's grounder, and Hurst's double in the seventh all brought in a run.
Hurst, Specht, Morder, and Luzier each picked up a pair of hits. Benner improved to 1-1 after firing six innings. She allowed two earned, on seven hits, with six strikeouts, and a walk.
