Penn College sweeps Abington to lock up No. 1 seed

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Penn College swept Penn State Abington in a United East softball doubleheader to finish the regular season on top of the conference and secure the No. 1 seed in next week's playoffs. The Wildcats improved to 20-4 UE, 28-8 overall after a 5-0 win in game one and a 5-4 walk-off victory in the nightcap.

Penn College will host the United East playoffs Monday and Tuesday at Elm Park. The Wildcats will take on No. 4 seed Penn State Abington at 10 a.m., while No. 2 seed Penn State Berks will battle No. 3 Penn State Harrisburg at noon.

In game one,
The Wildcats took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning when Jordan Specht singled in Maddie Hurst and Mackenzie Weaver's sacrifice to right plated Specht. Specht double in the third put PCT ahead 3-0 before she touched home on Lexi Snyder's steal to made it 4-0. An error allowed Weaver to cross home and put the Wildcats ahead 5-0.

Hurst, Specht, Snyder, and Madison Shaffer all picked up two hits for Penn College.

Weaver improved to 15-4 after a complete-game shutout. She scattered four hits, struck out seven, and walked one.

In game two,
Snyder's single to left in the bottom of the seventh inning broke a 4-4 deadlock and secured the win for Penn College.

The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead on a Specht single in the third before the Nittany Lions took a 3-1 lead in the fifth. Specht tied the game in the fifth on a two-run single before Abington regained the lead in sixth. Specht was at it again in the seventh with a double to tie the game for a final time, setting up Snyder's winning hit.

Specht finished with three hits and four RBI, while Hurst and Shaffer both finished with a pair of hits.

Johanna Devore improved to 3-1 after 2.2 innings. After relieving Kyla Benner (4.1 IP, 3 ER, 5 Ks) in the fifth, Devore finished with one earned run, on four hits.
