READING, Pa. — Penn College lost 4-2 on Saturday at Penn State Berks to wrap up a rain-delayed three-game United East baseball series that began with a split on April 27. Penn College now is 14-6 in the UE and 20-18 overall. PS Berks is 10-11 UE, 11-24 overall.
How it happened: Berks scored three runs in the first inning and added another in the third against Wildcats' starting pitcher Ben Bretzman. Through eight innings, Berks held the Wildcats to four hits with two of them leadoff doubles by Tristan Current in the second inning and Quinn Hanafin in the sixth.
Penn College made things interesting in the top of the ninth, however, as Current had a leadoff single, Nathan Gustkey reached base on a one-out single and Shane Price followed with a single that scored Current. Pinch-hitter Anthony Barbella drew a walk before Brian Robison plated Gustkey for the second run on a sacrifice fly for the final Wildcats run as they left two on base that inning and four others during the game.
Inside the box: Current finished 2 for 4 at the plate. Bretzman went six innings, striking out nine and walking two, while dropping to 4-4 on the season.
Up next: Penn College hosts St. Mary's (Md.) College in a UE makeup game at 1 p.m. on Monday.
