ST, MARY'S CITY, Md. – Penn College advanced to its first-ever United East men's soccer championship after the No. 5 seeded Wildcats knocked off top-seed St. Mary's, 2-1, in Wednesday's semifinal match. PCT improved to 11-6-2, while the Seahawks wrapped up their season at 13-6-1.
The Wildcats will travel to No. 2 Penn State Harrisburg Saturday for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
How it happened: Both teams had a pair of shots on frame in the first half, but all four were turned away to keep the contest scoreless at the break.
Cooper Smith sent a shot on target in the sixth minute for PCT, while
Joshua Hudak's shot was stopped in the 30
th minute.
Justin Crismale stopped shots in the 33
rd and 34
th minutes.
After Crismale picked up his third save in the 53
rd minute, St. Mary's struck first with an unassisted tally in the 66
th minute. The Wildcats netted the equalizer three minutes later when
Mason Kostick connected with
Logan Pietrzak in the 69
th. Crismale turned away two more shots before
Diego Diaz finished
Cooper Smith's pass in the 78
th minute with the go-ahead score. The Seahawks had one final look on goal with seven seconds left but Crismale stoned the potential equalizer to secure the victory.
Inside the box: St. Mary's outshot PCT, 20-12 (7-4 on-goal), while both teams finished with three corner kicks. Crismale finished with six saves for the Wildcats.
