MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Penn College softball went 4-5 at the Fast Pitch Spring Break Classic held in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Wildcats defeated SUNY Canton, 8-0, Hilbert College, 2-0,Brevard College, 4-2, and Mississippi University for Women, 4-0, while falling to FDU-Florham, 6-5, Sweet Briar College, 1-0, Malone, 5-4, William Peace, 4-0, and Dickinson, 2-0. Penn College's record stands at 6-7 overall.
Against SUNY Canton,
Penn College defeated the Kangaroos, 8-0 in five innings on Sunday afternoon as Weaver dominated the Kangaroos in the circle where she struckout 12 and allowed just one hit, a single in the top of the fifth inning. She also went 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs. Weaver started the day with a two-run single in the third inning and later scored on a
Ryleigh Rinker double to give the Wildcats a 3-0 lead.
Madison Herriman ignited the offense as part of another three-run inning as her RBI single drove in
Fayth Anderson and back-to-back singles from
Grace Lorson and Weaver stretched the Wildcat lead to 6-0.
Payton Crawford's two-run single to score
Sofia LaSpina and Rinker in the fifth ended the game in walk-off fashion. Rinker also posted a 3-for-3 game while Herriman and Lorson both earned two hits.
Against FDU-Florham,
The Wildcats fell to the Devils, 6-5 in extra innings Sunday night despite seven different Wildcats recording a hit. Weaver and
Lexi Snyder both drove in a team-high two RBIs. Penn College scored the game's first five runs with an RBi single by
Astyn Calaman n the second, a tow-run single off the bat of Snyder in the third and a two-run triple from Weaver before the Devils plated the final six runs to win in extra innings.
Against Hilbert,
Penn College defeated the Hawks, 2-0 to begin play on Tuesday afternoon.
Grace Lorson played the game's hero after driving in the only runs of the day. After
Madison Herriman drew a two-out walk, Lorson reached on an error which scored Herriman. In the fifth inning, Lorson roped an RBI single to centerfield to score
Fayth Anderson. Weaver picked up her fourth victory of the season in a two-hit shutout while striking out five.
Against Brevard College,
Mackenzi Tice leveled her record in the circle (1-1) following a 4-2 victory against the Tornadoes. The Wildcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning. Herriman led off with an infield single, Lorson walked and Weaver singled to load the bases. Herriman stole home and Lorson scored on a throwing error from the Brevard catcher while Crawford drove in Weaver with an RBI single. Penn College added an insurance run in the second when Lorson drove in LaSpina with an RBI single.
Tice went the distance with 12 Ks while surrendering just three hits in seven innings. Herriman led the Wildcats at the plate with three hits while Weaver and LaSpina both had two hits in the win.
Against Sweet Briar College,
Penn College fell to the Vixens, 1-0 in a pitchers duel in their lone game on Wednesday morning. The Wildcats and Vixens mustered just two hits each. Sweet Briar scored the game-winning run with a sacrifice bunt single to score a runner from third in the top of the seventh inning.
Lexi Snyder and
Ryleigh Rinker were responsible for the Wildcats hits while Weaver struckout six in the loss.
Against Malone,
Penn College dropped a 5-4 final to the Pioneers in the early game on Thursday. The Wildcats plated a run in the first inning on a Snyder double to score Lorson. Malone plated two runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead before the Wildcats re-tied the game when Herriman drove in
Carissa Lusk in the top of the fifth. The Pioneers scored two in the bottom of the frame and one in the sixth to hang on in the win.
Lorson and Snyder both finished 2-for-3 at the plate.
Against William Peace,
Penn College fell, 4-0 to the Pacers on Thursday afternoon. William Peace scored three runs in the first and one in the seventh while holding the Wildcats to just three hits by Lorson, Crawford and Rinker. Tice struckout seven in the loss.
Against Mississippi U. for Women,
Weaver singled in Herriman in the first to score the game's first run, before the Wildcats added three in third – with RBIs from Crawford and Hamilton, and an error.
Herriman and Anderson both finished with a pair of hits, while Weaver improved to 5-3 after a complete-game shutout. She scattered three hits, struck out nine and walked no batters.
Against Dickinson,
The Devils scored a run in the fifth and added an insurance run in the seventh. Herriman paced the offense with a pair of hits, while Anderson took the loss in the circle, after allowing one earned, on three hits, with four strikeouts, and five walks.
