SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — Penn College dropped a men's and women's tennis match to Susquehanna University on Saturday at the Central PA Tennis Center. The Wildcats men fell, 7-0, while the women's team dropped a 6-1 fina score. The Wildcat men fell to 3-1 and women dropped to 1-3. Both of the Riverhawks' programs improved to 2-0 on the season.
how it happened (men): Susquehanna University earned the doubles point with wins at No. 3 and No. 1 doubles. Griffin Yereance and Max Persing defeated
Valentino Barillaro and Christian Ambromovage 6-1 at No. 3, and Owen Miller and Daniel Murphy clinched the point with a 6-3 win over
Joshua Myers and
Eli Greeley at No. 1. Penn College answered at No. 2, where
Matt Williams and
Avery Hawk defeated Dante Neely and Owen Trump 6-2.
Susquehanna University carried the 1-0 lead into singles and added the first two singles points. Miller defeated Myers 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, and Murphy beat Greeley 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 to put Susquehanna University one point away. Persing then clinched the dual at No. 6 singles with a 6-3, 7-6(6) victory over Ambromovage.
The final three singles matches were completed after the clinch. Yereance defeated Hawk 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 (11-6) at No. 4, Nathan Hepner topped Barillaro 6-7, 6-0, 1-0 (11-8) at No. 5 and Neely defeated Williams 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (11-6) at No. 3 as the Wildcats fell 7-0.
How it happened (women): The Wildcats opened doubles with
Leah Vest and
Kiera Wene defeating Alexa Wanamaker and Mackenzie Romig 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. Susquehanna answered at No. 3, where Elizabeth Vitale and Rowan Butters defeated Arista Fine and
Callistra Mahoney 6-4, then clinched the doubles point at No. 2 as Katherine Yoder and Abigail Freeman edged
Faith Murray and Alex McDougal 7-5.
Murray pulled Penn College even at 1-1 to start singles, defeating Yoder 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Susquehanna moved back in front at No. 6, where Butters defeated Mahoney 6-1, 6-2, and Freeman followed with a 6-3, 6-1 win over McDougal at No. 4 to put Susquehanna one point away.
Vitale clinched the match for Susquehanna at No. 5 singles with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Fine. In post-clinch results, Wanamaker defeated Vest 6-3, 7-6(4) at No. 1, and Romig closed with a 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (11-9) victory over Wene at No. 2 as the Wildcats fell 6-1.
