WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. -- Penn College split a pair of nonconference seven inning baseball games against Lancaster Bible in the season opening series Saturday afternoon. The Chargers took game one, 9-2, before the Wildcats bounced back with a 12-3 victory in the second outing. The Wildcats begin the season 1-1 while the Chargers are 2-2 overall.
In game one, LBC jumped on the board with a Nate Rosenzweig grand slam in the third inning. The Wildcats plated a run in the fourth when
Jaydon Goebel drove in
Shawn Townsend with a single to left. The Chargers scored two runs in the fifth with back-to-back solo home runs and three more runs in the seventh for the victory.
Townsend, Goebel and
Matt Munoz all finished 2-for-3 at the plate. Goebel plated two runs while Townsend scored twice.
Dallas Griess and
Logan Hinnershitz also registered one hit each.
In game two, already holding a 6-2 lead after three innings, the Wildcats put up a six-run fourth inning to take control of the game. Griess started off the fourth with a leadoff double and scored on the next at-bat on a Townsend double. Munoz drove in Townsend with a hard-hit single to center and scored on a wild pitch three batters later.
Royce Bowes reached on an infield single and later scored on a wild pitch and Hinnershitz scored on a double steal for the sixth run of the inning.
Townsend went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Ethan Stahl went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI for two of the Wildcats' first three runs.
McGwire Heverly picked up the win on the mound with two innings in relief of
Griffin Vollman. Heverly gave up just one hit and fanned three.
