ELMIRA, N.Y. — Penn College fell to Elmira, 3-0, (19-25, 16-25, 22-25) in nonconference women's volleyball action Wednesday evening. The Wildcats finished with 18 kills and a .111 hitting percentage, compared to the Soaring Eagles' 30 kills and a .167 percentage. PCT dropped to 0-14 overall this season while Elmira moved to 1-9 overall.
How it happened: The Wildcats' main push came after Elmira built a 19-12 lead, as PCT won seven of the next eight rallies to make it 20-19.
Peyton Maass served two aces during that stretch, while
Lilly Stockum had three kills and
Claire Roan added another. Elmira closed with the final five points to take the first set, 25-19.
PCT made a mid-set push after falling behind 10-3, with a Maass/
Kendall Shade block and back-to-back
Taryn Smith service aces helping close the gap to 13-11. Elmira answered with six straight points to move ahead 19-11 and went on to take the second set, 25-16.
The Wildcats erased an early 6-1 deficit in the third set, getting a Roan kill and a
Gabby McKenzie ace during a push that pulled PCT even at 7-7. Stockum later served an ace to tie the set again at 10-10, but Elmira moved back in front and built a 24-20 edge. The Wildcats stayed alive on a
Sara Seyfert kill and an Elmira attack error before Elmira closed out the set, 25-22.
Inside the box: Stockum led PCT with seven kills and 10.5 points, adding three service aces and a block assist. Smith recorded a team-high 11 assists and matched the team lead with three aces. Maass collected a team-best nine digs while adding four kills and three aces. Roan scored three kills on four attacks without an error, hitting .750.
Averleigh McFarlan led Elmira with 11 kills and 13 points while adding six digs and two service aces. Zoie Karcz recorded five service aces and 10 assists. Ellora Bynoe added six kills, four service aces and eight digs. Vicki Titus collected a team-high 10 digs and served two aces.
Up next: Penn College visits Lancaster Bible College for the first United East Conference contest of the season at 11 a.m. and plays Keuka at 1 p.m., on Saturday, Sept. 26.
