WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University erased a nine point deficit in the finals eight minutes to edge Penn College 75-71 in a non-conference men's basketball game Tuesday. The Wildcats fell to 0-2, while the Hornets improved to 2-0.
Thomas Ross scored a game-high 25 points for Penn College. The junior connected on 7 of 9 threes and added eight rebounds.
Kevin Laurence-El notched a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while
Marquis Delgado finished with 10 points.
Three Hornets finished in double digits, led by Aaron Patterson's 14.
The Wildcats took a nine point edge with a 6-0 spurt beginning with 10:05 left in the game. The run started on a Laurence-El layup, followed by Ross' fast break layup and ended on another Laurence-El bucket with 8:35 left in the game with Penn College ahead 60-51. The Hornets countered with a 12-2 run and evened the game at 63-63 on a Malcolm Clark layup with 4:19 left in the contest.
Shenandoah added five straight points, to increase its scoring run to 17-2, and took a 68-63 lead with 3:15 on the clock. Penn College got as close as three, 68-65, on Delgado's traditional three-point play with 2:57 left in the game. The Hornets lead never dipped below four the remainder of the contest.
Penn College overcame a pair of nine-point deficits early in the game. Shenandoah took a 13-4 lead with 16:57 left in the opening half before two Ross treys made it a three-point game. The Hornets led 19-12 at 14:29 before the Wildcats pulled within one, 23-22, on another Ross three with 11:46 left before the break. Penn College evened the game, 27-27, on a Laurence-El layup at 8:06 before taking its first lead, 30-29, on a Ross long ball with 5:19 left before the half before leading 36-35 at halftime.
The Hornets benefitted from a deep bench with a 26-6 advantage in bench points and scored 17 points off turnovers.
Penn College returns to action Friday, 6 p.m., hosting Cairn University.
