WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Cairn University erased a nine-point deficit, in the final 13 minutes of the game, to edge Penn College 74-66 in a non-conference men's basketball game Friday. The Highlanders improved to 3-0, while the Wildcats dropped to 0-3.
Kevin Laurence-El led Penn College with 24 points on 8 of 16 shooting, including 3 of 3 from behind the arc.
Marquis Delgado finished with 20 points, while
Thomas Ross recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds for Penn College.
Cairn was led by Gerroid Doughty's game-high 25 points.
Ross' rebound, and ensuing coast-to-coast dunk gave Penn College a 48-39 lead with 13:43 left in the game. Cairn answered with a 17-0 scoring run, spanning nearly three minutes, and took a 56-48 lead on Kyle Bonner's three with 10:06 left in the game. The Wildcats pulled within four, 56-52, when Delgado converted a fast-break layup. The Highlanders held off the rally and their lead never dipped below three when
Chris Johnson's layup at 2:42 made it 66-63. Cairn finished the game with an 8-3 spurt.
Penn College scored the first six points of the contest, and led by 14, 18-4, on
Bryce Lonsway's trey with 12:36 left in the opening half. Cairn pulled within six, 18-12, at the halfway point of the first but Penn College hit another double digit advantage on Laurence-El's jumper with 4:32 to make it 30-17. Cairn finished the first with a 13-4 scoring run but still trailed, 34-30, at the break.
Penn College edged the Highlanders, 28-26, in points in the paint, while Cairn picked up 19 points off of turnovers and received 36 points from its bench.
The Wildcats returns to action Dec. 3, 6 p.m., hosting Alfred State.
