WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Gordon College overcame a three point halftime deficit with 52 points in the second half en route to an 84-78 win over Penn College in the first game of the Crosstown Challenge. The Fighting Scot improved to 4-4, while the Wildcats fell to 2-5.
Marquis Delgado netted a career-high 30 points for Penn College on 9 of 20 shooting, including 3 of 4 from long range. He added six assists, four steals and four rebounds.
Kevin Laurence-El finished with 13 points and
Bryce Lonsway scored 10.
Garrisson Duvivier recorded a double-double for Gordon with 27 points and 15 rebounds.
Penn College held a slight edge early in the game before the Scot took a 9-7 lead with 13:38 left in the opening half. The Wildcats answered with a 9-0 run - on a pair of threes from Lonsway, and one trey from Delgado - to take a 16-9 lead at the midway point. Penn College took its largest lead, 28-16, after a pair of Delgado free throws before Gordon went on a 14-3 run to pull within one, 31-30, with 1:37 left before the break. The Wildcats led 35-32 at halftime.
After Gordon evened the game, 41-41, with 16:53 left in the game, Penn College took its largest leads of the second half - by five - twice, the first coming after a
Joseph Mangiero trey at 12:07, and the final after a pair of Laurence-El free throws a minute later to put PCT ahead 54-49. The Scot answered with a 7-0 run to lead 56-54 at 10:25 and, after a Delgado layup tied the game 10 seconds later, eventually led by as many as 16, 75-59, with 4:50 on the clock. Penn College got as close as three, 81-78, with 42 ticks left, but couldn't get any closer.
Gordon turned 20 offensive rebounds into 19 second-chance points and received 29 points from its bench, while the Wildcats netted 13 points off of turnovers.
Penn College returns to action Sunday, 1 p.m., at Lycoming College in the final game of the Crosstown Challenge.
