ABINGTON, Pa. – Penn College overcame a halftime deficit – and used two free throws from
Jamie Steer in the final six seconds – to upset Penn State Abington 71-70 in a North Eastern Athletic Conference women's basketball game Friday. The Wildcats improved to 11-8 NEAC, 12-12 overall, while the Lions dropped to 15-4, 18-5.
Penn College had six of its eight players reach double figures. Steer paced the Wildcats with 16 points,
Hannah Schoenly pumped in 12 and
Alicia Ross,
Danielle Mowery,
Charese Bova and
Anna-Marie Raybuck each finished with 10 points. Bova also grabbed 10 rebounds.
Stephanie Keyes led all scorers with 27 points for Abington.
Trailing 37-30 at halftime, Penn College opened the second half with a 12-5 run and tied the game, 42-42, after a Bova layup with 16:01 left in the game. The game featured seven more deadlocks over the next nine minutes until Abington grabbed a 66-63 with 4:31 on the clock. A Bova layup capped a 6-2 Penn College run and gave the Wildcats a 69-68 advantage with 1:52 left. Keyes put the Lions back on top after her layup made it 70-69 with 1:06 left in the game Steer sank both of her free throws with six ticks left to secure the win for the Wildcats.
Penn State Abington built an 18 point lead midway through the first half, 28-10, before Penn College ended the half on a 20-9 spurt to cut the deficit to seven. All eight of the Wildcats scored at least one point in the run.
Penn College returns to action Saturday, 12 p.m., at Bryn Athyn.
