Strong Second Half Lifts Penn College over Cazenovia


WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Penn College rallied from a small halftime deficit with 49 points in the second half, to knock off Cazenovia 86-76 in a North Eastern Athletic Conference women's basketball game Sunday. Penn College improved to 10-9 overall, 9-6 NEAC, while Cazenovia fell to 8-12, 6-7.

Alicia Ross was just shy of a triple-double with 16 points, nine assists and eight steals for Penn College. Charese Bova picked up her 12th double-double with 16 points and a game-high 24 rebounds, while Hannah Schoenly and Danielle Mowery finished with 15 and 11 points, respectively, for Penn College.

Jamie Steer scored a game-high 24 points for Penn College and is 21 points shy of 1,000 career points.

Erin O'Malley netted a team-best 17 points for Cazenovia.

After Penn College took an early 5-0 lead, Cazenovia responded with a 7-2 scoring run to even the contest at 7-7 with 14:56 left in the opening half. The game was tied for a second time, 15-15, on a Ross free throw with 9:17 on the clock. Cazenovia embarked on an 18-5 run, spanning five minutes, to take its largest lead, 33-20, with 4:06 left before halftime. Penn College responded with an 18-6 run – led by five points each for Steer and Ross – the remainder of the half to pull within two, 39-37, at halftime.

The opening minute of the second half saw the game tied twice before a Schoenly trey put Penn College ahead 44-41 with 18:51 left in the game. Cazenovia pulled within one three separate times in the ensuing three minutes, the final coming at 15:59 with Penn College holding a 52-51 advantage. PC put together a 17-7 run to take its largest lead, 69-58, on another Schoenly three with 9:36 left in the game. Cazenovia netted 13 straight points to take a 71-69, with 7:32 left in the second. Penn College countered with 11 straight points and led 80-71 with 2:49 left in the game and its lead never dipped below six the remainder of the contest.

Penn College returns to action Monday, 6 p.m., at Elmira.
