ELMIRA, N.Y. – Elmira College led wire-to-wire en route to an 88-66 win over Penn College in a non-conference women's basketball game Monday. The Eagles improved to 10-10, while the Wildcats dropped to 8-12.
Alicia Ross led Penn College with 27 points and dished out a team-high six assists.
Jamie Steer finished with 19 points -- two shy of reaching 1,000 points in her career – and pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds, while
Charese Bova finished with 11 rebounds for the Wildcats.
Danielle Cleary netted a game-high 28 points for Elmira.
After the Eagles jumped out to a 10-2 lead, Penn College pulled within three after five straight points by Ross made it 10-7 with 13:42 left in the first. The Wildcats got as close as three points two more times in the half, the first after a Steer layup made it 12-9 at 12:37 and the final one after a Bova free throw at 7:32 made the score 21-18. Elmira eventually took a 40-29 edge at halftime.
Penn College could only get as close as nine in the second half, on three occasions. A pair of Steer free throws at 11:05 closed the gap to 55-46. Ross' layup at 7:32 put the Wildcats within nine again, 64-55, and another Ross bucket at 4:22 made it 70-61. Elmira finished the final four minutes of the game on an 18-5 run.
Penn College returns to action Saturday, 12 p.m., at Wells College.
