Wildcats Split with Lions


READING, Pa. – Penn College split a North Eastern Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader with Penn State Berks Saturday. The Wildcats took the first game 4-2 before the Nittany Lions returned the favor with a 3-1 win in the nightcap. Penn College sits at 5-10 overall, 1-1 NEAC, and Penn State Berks is 7-12-1, 1-3.

In Game One,
Penn College struck first with a run in the first inning when Evan Vigna brought home Deric Ellerman with a ground out. The Lions evened the score with a run in the third inning.

The Wildcats tacked on three runs in the seventh on four errors by Penn State Berks to take a 4-1 lead. Errors plated James Simasek, Dylan Scaringi and Jeremy Rall. Penn State added one more run in the eighth inning.

Ellerman led all batters going 3 for 4 for Penn College. Ryan Hostrander picked up his second win this season firing seven strong innings. He struck out nine batter, walked one and scattered seven hits. Zach Junk earned his third save this season with one strike out in one inning of work.

In Game Two,
The Lions pumped in three runs in the third – two unearned – to take a 3-0 lead. The Wildcats added a run in the fourth when Simasek singled to leftfield plating Carlos Rodriguez. The remainder of the game went scoreless for both teams.

Noah Esposito went 2 for 3 at the plate for Penn College. Aaron Palmer was saddled with the loss after hurling five innings, with four strikeouts, three walks and three runs (only one earned). Sean Pavlik picked up the win for Berks.

Penn College returns to the diamond Sunday, 1 p.m., at Penn State Abington.
