WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Penn College earned a pair of walk-off wins over Cazenovia in a North Eastern Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Saturday. PCT needed 11 innings to secure an 11-10 win in game one, before winning the nightcap 8-0 in six innings. Penn College improved to 5-11 overall, 3-3 NEAC, while Cazenovia dropped to 7-10, 4-3.
In Game One,
Katie Kratzer's RBI single to centerfield in the bottom of the 11
th inning ended a marathon first game for Penn College. PCT entered the 11
th trailing 10-8 and evened the game on a
Nicole Lo Furno double to left and
Arika Stopper's single to center.
After an error in the third gave Cazenovia a 2-0 lead, Penn College responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Kratzer's two-run single and
Jessica Gmerek's RBI single put PCT ahead 3-2. Cazenovia added runs in the fourth and fifth innings before Penn College rallied again to take a 5-4 lead following RBI singles from Kratzer and
Macie Lucas.
Cazenovia's run in the sixth evened the game at 5-5 and eventually sent the game into extra innings.
The teams traded one run each in the eighth, ninth and tenth innings with Lucas coming up with two RBI in those innings and
Karey Wolfe knocking in the other.
Kratzer went 4 for 6, with 4 RBI for Penn College, Lucas finished 3 for 5, with 3 RBI and Lo Furno and
Alexandra Brennan each had two hits.
Stopper improved to 4-3 after hurling all 11 innings. She struck out 11, walked two and surrendered 10 runs (just three earned).
In Game Two,
Penn College came out swinging with six runs in the first two innings. Lucas stroked a two-run double in the first, which brought home both Gmerek and Kratzer. Kratzer and Lucas had RBI singles in the second and Lyter belted a two-run double to put PC ahead 6-0.
Lucas later scored on an error in the fourth before Lyter reached on an error in the bottom of the sixth inning, which plated Gmerek for the winning run.
Lucas went 4 for 4, with 3 RBI for PCT and Gmerek was 2 for 4 at the plate. Lyter picked up her first win with a complete-game shutout. She struck out two and scattered five hits.
Penn College returns to action Sunday, 1 p.m., hosting Morrisville.
