Mounts Edge Wildcats in Two Games


WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Penn College dropped a pair of close non-conference games against Division II Mansfield in a doubleheader Tuesday at Bowman Field. The Mountaineers won the first game 5-3 and edged the Wildcats 3-2 in the nightcap. Mansfield improved to 13-21, while Penn College dropped to 10-15.

In Game One,
Mansfield added four runs in the second inning to take an early lead and added a run in the fifth to lead 5-0. Penn College chipped away at its deficit with a run in the fifth and two in the sixth.

Jeremy Rall plated Noah Esposito with sacrifice fly in the fifth, Cole Weachock crossed home in the sixth on an error and Esposito knocked in a run with a single that scored James Simasek.

Evan Vigna and Dylan Scaringi both recorded two hits for the Wildcats.

Louis Sick improved to 2-1 for Mansfield after six innings and one earned run. Matt Demilio fell to 1-2 after five innings and four earned runs.

In Game Two,
Mansfield took another early lead with a run in the opening frame before Devin Masser evened the game with a sacrifice fly to right that scored Cole Weachock.

The Mounts tacked on two runs in the third (one earned) in the third inning before Rall drew a bases loaded walk in the fourth to plate the Wildcats second and final run.

Noah Esposito finished with a team-best two hits for Penn College.

Chas Parsons improved to 2-1 with five innings of work and one earned run. Matt Zielen earned his first save with two innings of perfect relief.

Jed Blankenhorn fell to 0-2 after three innings and two earned runs. Ryan Hostrander, Aaron Palmer, Max Bair and Zach Junk each pitched an inning for Penn College, collectively allowing two hits and no runs.

Penn College returns to action Saturday, 1 p.m., hosting Cazenovia.
