Gmerek’s Walk-Off Hit Helps Penn College Split with SUNY IT

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Jessica Gmerek's walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted Penn College to a split with SUNY IT in a North Eastern Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Friday at Elm Park. Penn College sits at 6-8 NEAC, 8-22 overall, while SUNY IT is 8-4, 10-12.

In Game One,
Penn College took an early 2-0 lead after RBI singles by Katie Kratzer and Gmerek in the first inning. SUNY IT tacked on four runs in the second, three in the third and four in the fourth to take an 11-2 lead. Penn College picked up a two run double from Karey Wolfe in the fourth and Stephanie Kramer's sacrifice grounder in the fifth to close out the scoring.

Wolfe and Kratzer both went 2 for 4 at the plate for Penn College.

Arika Stopper dropped to 5-6 after 3.1 innings of inning, with four strikeouts and 11 runs (8 earned). Kramer fired 3.2 scoreless innings in relief.

In Game Two,
Gmerek's hit, which plated Macie Lucas, capped the win for Penn College after it surrendered a four run lead in the sixth.

SUNY IT took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning before Penn College took a 3-1 lead in the second. Stopper hit a RBI single to right before Nicole Lo Furno belted a two run single to center.
After SUNY IT added a run in the fourth, Penn College responded with two in the bottom of the fourth inning and one in the fifth to lead 6-2. Kratzer brought home two on a double in the fourth and Stopper stroked another RBI single in the fifth.

SUNY IT added four in the sixth – including a three run homer – to even the contest, which eventually sent it into extra innings. Penn College got out of the eighth inning when SUNY IT lined into a double play (Shelby Lyter to Kramer) with the bases loaded.

Lo Furno went 4 for 4 at the plate for Penn College, Wolfe and Alexandra Brennan each had three hits and Kratzer, Gmerek and Stopper had two hits each.

Shelby Lyter improved to 3-10 after eight innings of work. She struck out five, walked two and allowed six runs (three earned).
