Despite Sweep By SUNYIT, Penn College Still Reaches NEAC Playoffs


UTICA, N.Y.  – Penn College dropped a pair of North Eastern Athletic Conference baseball games against SUNYIT in its regular season finale Saturday. Penn College fell 5-2 in game one and 6-2 in the nightcap. Penn College finished the regular season at 7-7 NEAC, 15-18 overall, and SUNYIT finished at 11-3, 16-12.

Penn College finished fourth in the NEAC and will compete in the conference playoffs next weekend against either SUNY IT or Penn State Abington. The playoff schedule will be released Sunday.

In Game One,
SUNYIT took a 5-0 lead through the sixth inning before Penn College added a run in the seventh and eighth innings. James Simasek's sacrifice fly in the seventh plated Evan Vigna before Carlos Rodriguez doubled to center in the eighth to score Jeremy Rall.

Cole Weachock led Penn College with two hits.

Ryan Hostrander fell to 4-2 after six innings, five strike outs, two walks and five runs (four earned).

In Game Two,
After SUNYIT took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, Penn College added two in the third to lead 2-1. Zach Weil's single to right scored Rodriguez and Weachock brought in Vigna with an infield single.

SUNYIT added a run in the fourth and four in the sixth innings.

Weil and Weachock both finished with two hits for Penn College.

Tyler Cooklin fell to 2-3 after four innings, two strike outs, three walks and five runs (three earned).
