WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Lycoming College netted a goal late in the second half to edge Penn College 1-0 in the annual 'Battle for the Lumber' women's soccer match Wednesday. The Wildcats fell to 4-5-2, while the Warriors improved to 7-3.
It was Lycoming's fourth win in the 'Battle for the Lumber' in the six-year history of the trophy contest.
Hannah Rinaldo broke a scoreless tie in the 83
rd minute after depositing a pass from Meghenn Jackson. Bree Nishibun sent Jackson the ball after a throw-in and was also credited with an assist on the play.
The winning score came a minute after Penn College missed two chances to get on the board following
Hailee Hartman's corner kick in the 81
st minute.
Jordan Courter's ensuing shot was blocked before
Breanna Cline collected the rebound and fired wide. Hartman barely missed a chance to give the Wildcats a 1-0 advantage in the 54
th minute when her shot bounced off the crossbar.
Penn College survived an early onslaught from the Warriors in the opening 23 minutes of the game. Lycoming fired off five shots in a five-minute span, but
Colleen Bowes stopped three attempts, one sailed wide and the other hit the crossbar. Bowes was up to the task again in a four-minute spurt beginning in the 24
th minute when four shots came her way. She stoned two shots, one was blocked and the other flew wide of the net.
The Wildcats were held to two shots in the opening half and finished with seven shots and seven corners. Lycoming recorded 20 shots and nine corner kicks.
Bowes finished with seven saves, and Helen Ross and Joelle Winey combined for three stops for the Warriors.
Penn College returns to action Sunday, 3 p.m., at Cazenovia.
