ALFRED, N.Y. – Alfred State scored a goal in both halves to hand Penn College a 2-0 setback in a non-conference men's soccer match Saturday night. It was the Wildcats first loss of the season in three matches.
Penn College started off aggressive with a pair of
Luke McFalls shots that missed the target in the opening eight minutes. Alfred State countered with three shots in a nine-minute span, two of which were stopped by
Malcolm Kane, one that went over the net and the other hit the crossbar. Kane later stopped a header attempt in the 35
th minute, before the Pioneers struck when Nick Donner found Mitchell Porter to give AS a 1-0 lead in the 39
th minute.
Penn College missed two chances for points in the 57
th and 59
th minutes after
Gerry Lua's shot was wide and
Austin Dowrick's attempt was stopped by Kenneth Allport. The Pioneers made it 2-0 in the 74
th minute when Torey Stinks found the back of the net.
Tarik Laroche had two shots miss the mark in the final seven minutes of the contest.
Kane finished with six saves for the Wildcats, while Allport stopped one shot for the Pioneers.
Alfred State held a 14-9 advantage in shots and a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
Penn College returns to the pitch Sunday, 5:30 p.m., at Alfred University.
