WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – SUNY Cobleskill outscored Penn College 24-7 in the third quarter and held on for a 54-51 win over Penn College in North Eastern Athletic Conference women's basketball game Saturday. The Tigers improved to 6-7 overall, 5-3 NEAC, while the Wildcats fell to 3-9, 3-7.
Alicia Ross and
Jamie Steer combined for 42 of Penn College's 51 points. Ross netted a game-high 22 points, added five assists and six rebounds.
Steer finished with 20 points and eight rebounds and tied her sister Kiersten as the all-time leading scorer in program history with 1,246 points.
Shelby Preston led the Tigers with 17 points and a game-high 18 rebounds, while Ashley Creighton and Morgan Bulls both finished with 13 points.
Trailing 17-7 early in the second quarter, Penn College used a 15-5 scoring run to even the game at 22-22 with 53 second left in the second quarter. Ross scored 13 points in the run for the Wildcats, before a pair of Steer free throws gave Penn College a 24-22 halftime lead.
The Tigers exploded in the third quarter by outscoring Penn College 24-7 to lead 46-31 at the end of the period.
Penn College opened the final quarter with a 15-3 scoring run – Ross and Steer both scored seven – to pull within three, 49-46, with 2:49 left in the game. The Wildcats got as close as three two more times in the closing minutes after a Ross layup made it 51-48 at 1:53, and Steer's layup with seven seconds left made it 54-51.
