WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – SUNY Poly used a pair of well-timed scoring surges to overcome deficits in each half en route to an 88-78 win over Penn College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference men's basketball game Sunday. Poly improved to 7-8 overall, 6-1 NEAC, while Penn College dropped to 3-13, 3-7.
Thomas Ross scored a team-best 18 points, which included four threes,
Kevin Laurence-El added 17,
Marquis Delgado scored 14 and
Joseph Mangiero finished with 11.
Quayshaun Mitchell netted a game-high 36 points for Poly, Terrynce Wilson scored 21 and Peyton Griffiths finished with 10.
After
Deaundra McCants connected from long range to put Penn College ahead 13, 27-14, with 8:52 left in the opener, Poly used a 9-2 scoring run to pull within six, 29-23, at 5:55. Ross countered with a trey a minute later to make it 32-23 with 4:40 remaining in the first. Poly went on a 17-9 spurt in the closing minutes to get within one, 41-40, at halftime.
The first nine minutes of the second half featured five lead changes before
Landon Muller's layup at 10:46 gave Penn College a 58-54 advantage. Following one more deadlock, 61-61, with 8:30 left in the game, Poly used a 13-6 scoring spurt to take a 74-67 lead with 4:04 remaining in the contest and never trailed the remainder of the game.
Penn College returns to action Wednesday, 6 p.m., at Penn State Berks.
