Patriots Top Wildcats

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The University of Valley Forge handed Penn College a 65-50 setback in a non-conference women's basketball game Saturday. The Patriots improved to 4-2, while the Wildcats fell to 0-7.

Gwendolyn Lavelle paced Penn College with 18 points and teammate Jane Herman finished with 14.

Jhanel Brown led all scorers with 28 points and pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds for Valley Forge. Carlee Conrad finished with 16 points for the Patriots.

Penn College overcame an early 12-0 deficit to get within seven, 14-7, at the end of the first quarter. The Wildcats used an 8-2 run – with five points from Lavelle and three from Herman – to get within one 16-15 and evened the game at 18 after Lavelle's trey with 7:37 left in the second quarter. The Patriots answered with a 14-4 spurt in the ensuing five minutes to take a 32-22 lead with 2:11 on the clock and led 34-26 at halftime.

Valley Forge took its largest lead, 44-27, with 8:35 left in the third before the Wildcats got as close as five, 46-41, after a pair of free throws from Herman with 1:38 remaining in the third. The contest remained a three possession game for the majority of the fourth quarter until the Patriots gained more separation from a 56-47 lead with a 9-1 run in the final two minutes.

Penn College returns to action Jan. 7 at Gallaudet University.
