Nelson Fans 14 in Split with Alfred State


WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Penn College split a non-conference doubleheader baseball game against Alfred State Thursday at Bowman Field. The Wildcats won the first game 8-2 before dropping the nightcap 9-3. Penn College improved to 4-8, while the Pioneers picked up their first win to sit at 1-12.

In Game One,
Cody Nelson fired six innings of two-hit baseball, and struck out a career-high 14 batters for the Wildcats. Nelson walked two and surrendered two runs (one earned).

Jeremy Rall, Cole Hoffman and Cole Weachock all picked up two hits for Penn College, which finished the game with 11.

The Wildcats added a run in each of the first and second innings. Richard Lennon's double to center in the first scored Rall, before Noah Esposito's single to left plated Carlos Rodriguez in the second.

After the Pioneers evened the game in the third inning, the Wildcats tacked on six unanswered in the ensuing innings.

Taylor Vandegrift and Rodriguez picked up RBIs in the bottom of the third, before Rall and Hoffman batted in a runner each in the fifth.

In Game Two,
The Pioneers jumped out to a 7-0 lead after the fifth inning - three were unearned.

Penn College got on the board in the fifth oh Hoffman's RBI single to left and added another run in the sixth when Rodriguez doubled to left. Alfred State answered in the seventh with a run, before Lennon plated Hoffman with a double in the seventh.

Hoffman finished with three hits for Penn College and Lennon picked up a pair of hits.

Kyle Fox fired 2.2 innings and was saddled with loss after surrendering four earned runs.

Penn College returns to action Saturday, 1 p.m., hosting Pitt-Bradford.
