WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Marywood University used a six-run second inning en route to an 11-6 win over Penn College in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday. The Pacers improved to 4-8, while the Wildcats fell to 5-10.
The Pacers took an early 7-0 lead – via a six-run second – and tacked on another run in the sixth before Penn College went on the board. Five of MU's runs were unearned.
The Wildcats scored their first run on
Evan Vigna's sacrifice hit that plated
Ed Suri in the bottom of the seventh. Marywood answered with two runs in the eighth and one in the ninth, before Penn College pumped in five runs in the final frame.
Deric Ellerman drew a bases-loaded walk to score
Taylor Vandegrift before
Trevor Route smacked a two-run double to center, that scored
Richard Lennon and
Braden Smith. A Suri single and
Cole Hoffman double, plated the final two runs of the game for the Wildcats.
Hoffman went 4 of 6 from the plate and Suri was 2 for 3.
Luke Zamiskie fell to 0-2 after allowing seven runs (just two earned) in 1.2 innings of work.
Trevor Dolin and
Devon Sanders combined for 3.1 innings and no hits in relief of Zamiskie, before three more pitchers made appearances.
The Wildcats begin defense of their 2015 NEAC Championship when they open conference play hosting SUNY Poly, 2 p.m., Saturday.
