WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Penn College handed Morrisville a pair of losses in the Wildcats North Eastern Athletic Conference softball opener Friday. Penn College improved to 2-0 NEAC, 8-7 overall with a 12-1 win in the first game, and an 8-0 shutout in the nightcap.
In game one,
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first, the Wildcats exploded for five runs in the frame.
Kelsey Gantz laced a RBI single to left,
Taylor Brooks and
Elizabeth Asher both touched home on errors and Asher knocked in a pair with a single to right.
Penn College added two in the second when a passed ball plated Brooks, and
Maddie Wenk scored
Nicole Lo Furno with a single to left. The Wildcats tacked on five in the fourth with RBIs by Asher and
Lauren Stehman, a two run single from
Amanda Kustanbauter and an error.
Brooks, Gantz and Asher all finished with two hits each, while Kustanbauter improved to 4-3 with a complete-game one-hitter. She surrendered just one hit, walked one and struck out seven.
In game two,
After two scoreless innings, Penn College added a run in the third and one in the fifth to take a 2-0 lead. Lo Furno plated
Tiana McCormick with a single to center in the third, and brought home McCormick again in the fifth with a single to right.
Lo Furno wasn't finished.
The senior cleared the bases in the sixth with a strand-up triple to deep center field to give the Wildcats a 5-0 lead. Gantz followed with a single to make it 6-0 before
Elizabeth Asher belted a walk-off two run double to center to end the game at 8-0.
Lo Furno finished with three hits and five RBI, while Gantz and Asher each picked up a pair of hits.
Brooks improved to 2-2 after firing six scoreless innings. She struck out 11 and walked just four batters.
Penn College returns to action Saturday, 1 p.m., hosting SUNY Cobleskill.
