Ross Beats Buzzer; Wildcats Edge Wilson

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Alicia Ross' buzzer-beating layup secured a 63-61 win for Penn College over Wilson College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference women's basketball game Saturday. The Wildcats improved to 2-10 overall, 2-6 NEAC, while the Phoenix fell to 2-7, 2-5.

Ross finished with a game-high 26 points, while Jane Herman finished with 15 and Gwendolyn Lavelle added 11. Ross also grabbed game-high 15 rebounds.

Ross is 112 points away from tying former teammate Jamie Steer '16 (1,422) for the program's career scoring mark.

Lindsey Purvis finished with 23 points for the Phoenix and Jordy Day added 20.

After Wilson erased a six-point gap to even the game at 61-61 with 54 seconds remaining, Penn College withstood an ensuing free throw attempt and gained possession with 21 seconds left in the game. Ross took the inbound pass on the near side and dribbled in the lane – splitting two defenders – before kissing the ball off the glass as the buzzer sounded.

The Wildcats overcame a 24-11 deficit after the first quarter by outscoring the Phoenix 26-10 in the second quarter. Penn College used a 15-2 scoring run to open the second – led by seven points from Herman – to even the game at 26-26 with 4:26 left before the break. Wilson regained the lead, 32-29, a minute later but Penn College ended the period with an 8-2 spurt to lead 37-34 at halftime.

The third quarter featured four deadlocks and several lead changes and finished even at 50-50.

Deadlocked again at 55-55 with 4:17 left in the game, Penn College went on 6-0 run and led 61-55 after Ross hit one of two from the line, leading to the final two minutes of the game.

Penn College returns to action Sunday, 12 p.m., hosting Gallaudet.
